A message by the artist:

This painting existed in a much more crude version for about a year. Trying to render the Savior always feels like a challenge I am inadequate to face and I didn%u2019t feel up to the challenge. I%u2019ve heard other artists echo this sentiment as well. What I have learned, though, time after time, is that the challenges we feel most unworthy to accept, are often the ones we need the most. Of course I am not worthy of the challenge. Of course I will not depict Him how He deserves. Did any of us deserve the sacrifice Christ gave? No. That%u2019s not why we were given it. Grace is given to those who do not measure up. If we were worthy of grace, it would not be a gift.

I was inspired to pick it up again when an assignment for an art class meant I had a full palette with each color in the color wheel. Not wanting the paint to go to waste, I picked up this portrait and went to work. With new options and new inspiration, I felt more prepared to face the challenge. When I began painting Christ again, I felt peace and calm. I learned about how I see Him and in doing so, how He sees me.

It was not by accident that this painting needed a full, robust color wheel to come into being. Though the colors in this painting are subtle, they make up a much more varied, complex Christ than the one I had attempted to paint before.

In painting Come, Follow Me, I tried to depict the Savior as the kind, guiding light he is. He is not only inviting us to follow him, but He is also checking to see that we are still there as He moves forward at our pace. He is giving us constant grace, patiently waiting as we wonder if we are worth what He offers%u2014forgetting all the while that His love is not conditional. He is made of you and me and that%u2019s what makes Him sacred. That%u2019s why He needed the full color wheel.
