Years ago while serving a mission, I had an experience one evening I carefully recorded in my journal. In my prayer before bed, I asked for a better understanding of the Atonement of Christ. I concluded my prayer and hopped right in bed.
In the middle of the night I woke up feeling extremely sick, so much so it got me out of bed. The feeling was so unbearable it brought me to my hands and my knees. I crawled out of my bedroom and found myself in the hallway completely and utterly alone in the dark, with my companion fast asleep, trembling on my hands and knees. It was at this moment the Spirit whispered to me, “Now think of the Savior.”
In this moment, in my mind’s eye, I saw the Savior in Gethsemane on His hands and knees trembling while bearing the weight of the world. It was a most sacred experience; me, who strained under my own load and could barely contain my feeling of sickness, I couldn’t fathom straining under the weight of all men. My prayer was answered in a unique and remarkable way. Afterwards I retired to my bed and gave thanks to God for the gift of His Son.
I know for myself and can testify that Jesus did indeed bear our burdens. He experienced me in the garden and He experience you as well. Thanks be to God for the gift of His Son!
