It’s one of the most heart-wrenching questions we face in this life:
Why do bad things happen to good people?
When we see kind, faithful people experience unimaginable loss, hardship, or betrayal, it can shake our faith. It seems unfair - almost cruel - that those who strive to do what’s right aren’t always protected from the pain and brokenness of the world.
But this question isn’t new. It echoes throughout the pages of Scripture and has been asked for centuries by prophets, disciples, and believers alike. And while there may not be an answer that satisfies every aching “why,” God does give us truth, comfort, and perspective through His Word.
Even the Righteous Suffered
The Bible is full of stories of faithful, “good” people who endured deep suffering. Job was a blameless man who feared God - and yet he lost everything. Joseph was sold into slavery by his own brothers, falsely accused, and imprisoned. Ruth lost her husband and chose a path of sacrifice and uncertainty. Even Jesus Christ, the only perfect person to ever walk the earth, was betrayed, beaten, and crucified.
Their stories remind us that being good doesn’t mean being exempt from hardship. In fact, sometimes it’s precisely because of someone's righteousness that they face opposition or trials. Jesus told His followers, “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world” (John 16:33).
God's Perspective Is Bigger Than Ours
When we ask why bad things happen to good people, we are often longing for justice - or at least understanding. But Scripture tells us, “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts” (Isaiah 55:9).
God sees what we cannot. He understands every thread in the tapestry of time—how pain might prepare a heart to receive Him, how suffering can purify motives, how trials can shape us into people we could never become otherwise. We may not see the full picture now, but God promises that nothing is wasted in His hands.
Christ Is With Us in the Pain
Perhaps the most powerful truth in moments of confusion or grief is this: Jesus knows. Not in a distant, theoretical way—but intimately. He suffered. He wept. He was rejected. Because of that, He walks with us in our darkest hours. He doesn’t always remove the pain, but He never lets us face it alone. As Psalm 34:18 promises, “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
A Better Ending Is Coming
When tragedy strikes or injustice prevails, we long for resolution. The good news of the gospel is that it’s coming. God is not finished yet.
Revelation 21:4 tells us that one day, “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain.” Until then, we trust in His character, His promises, and His perfect justice.
And when words fall short, visual reminders of His love can speak peace to the soul.
